      Abstract

The thesis is entitled Cohesive Devices in the Translation of The Novels “The Best of Me” By Nicholas Sparks Into “Yang Terbaik Dariku” By Ambhita Dhyaningrum. This analysis is conducted to find out the types of reference found in the novel by using Halliday’s theory and to analyze the translation procedures used by the translator Ambhita Dhyaningrum to translate the references in the novel by using Newmark’s translation procedures theory. The method of this thesis was descriptive quantitative which described the fact and characteristic systematically and served the findings in percentage. The unit of analysis was the sentences in the novel The Best of Me which contained references. There were only 100 references which were taken to be the data. The result of this thesis shows that both type of references found in the novel, anaphoric and cataphoric references. Anaphoric reference signifies a word or a phrase that refers to another word or phrase used in the earlier text. While cataphoric reference describes the use of a word of phrase that refers to another word or phrase which is used later in the text. From 100 samples of references, there were 67 references categorized in anaphoric references and 33 references categorized in cataphoric references. From the translation procedures analysis of the references, out of sixteen categories, there were only four that the translator used to translate the references. They were literal translation, shifts or transpositions, descriptive equivalent, and reduction and expansion. The categories used the most in the novel is transposition or shift with 49%, literal translation with 19%, descriptive equivalent with 16% and both reduction and expansion 16%. Transposition translation procedures mostly used in translating the reference because the translator changed the grammatical unit from a phrase into a word.
