    Abstract

    This thesis is entitled Grammatical Cohesion Analysis in English Department Theses of Dian Nuswantoro University. It has two objectives. First, to find out the types of grammatical cohesion in English Department Theses of Dian Nuswantoro University. Second, to describe the grammatical cohesion in English Department Theses of Dian Nuswantoro University. The research of this study is limited on all sentences that have types of grammatical cohesion. Using 3 Theses of Dian Nuswantoro University. This research use descriptive qualitative in nature. It describes and identifies the grammatical cohesive devices used in the English Department theses of Dian Nuswantoro University especially in the background section in the academic year of 2011. The technique of data analysis in this research was based on Halliday and Hasan (1976 ). From the analysis, it can be concluded that there are personal references with 99 words (37, 36 %). There are 19 words (7, 17 %) included in demonstrative reference. There are 2 words (0, 75%) included nominal ellipsis. Comparative references and nominal substitution with 1 word (0, 38 %) and it became the smallest number of grammatical cohesive devices. There are additive conjunctions with 86 words (32, 45 %), adversative conjunction with 7 words (2, 64 %), causal conjunction with 19 words (7, 17 %). The last is the number of temporal conjunction with 32 words (12, 08 %). The conclusion is that personal reference is the dominant kind of grammatical cohesion in the theses. Nominal substitution became the smallest number. From the occurrences types of grammatical cohesion, the theses are cohesive.
