    Abstract

    The thesis entitled Hedges in the speech of President Barack Obama at university of Indonesia on November 10, 2010. Firstly, it is aimed at identifying types of hedges in the speech. Second, it is aimed at identifying the reasons for hedging in the speech. The subject of this study is a speech of President Barack Obama at University of Indonesia on November 10, 2010. found in the internet of the speech of President Barack Obama. Technique of data analysis used in this study is descriptive method because it has purpose to observe, to explain every utterance in a speech of President Barack Obama at University of Indonesia on November 10, 2010. The steps followed to analyze the data are identifying types of hedges used in the text Speech of President Barack Obama at university of Indonesia on November 10, 2010. And finding the reasons why President Barack Obama used hedges on his speech. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the types of hedges are found in the text are modal auxiliary verbs used 21 times (80,76%) that consist of modal verbs can, cannot, could, may, should, and would , and then introductiory phrase used 4 times (15.38%). The last is 'if�' clauses,if anything used also 1 time (3,84%). There are four reasons why President Barack Obama used hedges in his speech, they are to minimize the threat-to-face, be a way of being more precise in reporting result, be positive or negative politeness strategies, and to comfort an established speech style.
