    Abstract

    The thesis is entitled An Analysis of Translation Types on The Alchemist novel by Paulo Coelho into Sang Alkemis by Tanti Lesmana. It has only one objective. It is aimed at finding out the translation types in the novel The Alchemist and its Indonesian version Sang Alkemis. The researcher collected the data by documentation method. The English is the source language text and the Indonesian is the target language text. The data collected were analyzed by reading the both versions of the novel, and classifying each utterance according to the translation types. From the analysis, it can be concluded that there are 8 translation types are found out from 139 utterances. The translation types used by the translator in translating The Alchemist novel are: word for word translation (4 utterances), literal translation (63 utterances), free translation (18 utterances), dynamic translation (1 utterance), pragmatic translation (6 utterances), linguistic translation (3 utterances), ethnographic translation (1 utterance), communicative translation (36 utterances) and semantic translation (7 utterances). The result of the analysis shows that literal translation and communicative translation is the mostly found in the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho translated into Sang Alkemis by Tanti lesmana. Literal translation with total of 63 (45,32 %) from 139 utterances and communicative with total 36 (25,89 %) from 139 utterances.
