    Abstract

    This thesis entitled The translation methods used in Lewis Caroll'S novel Alice in Wonderland into Alice di Negeri Impian by Khairi Rumantati it has two objectives. First, it is aimed at finding out the translation method used in the novel Alice in Wonderland into Alice di Negeri Impian. Second, it is aimed at finding out the reason of the methods that are used in translating the novel. Searching, choosing and purposive sampling was used in collecting the data. The data collected were analyzed by reading the both version of the novel, classifying each sentence according to the translation methods and explaining why the sentences are included into each translation method. There are 270 sentences out of 3 chapters in the novel. The translation method which are used in translating Lewis Caroll'S novel Alice in Wonderland into Alice di Negeri Impian by Khairi Rumantati there are word for word 11 (4,1%) word for word translation, 201 (74,4%) literal translation, 6 (2,3%) faithful translation, 7 (2,6%) semantic translation, 42 (15,5% ) free translation, and 3 (1,1%) communicative translation. As the result, the translator often uses literal translation. The reason is that the translator still keeps the grammatical construction of the source language is converted into the nearest the target language.
