    Abstract

    This thesis is entitled Ethnography of Communication in Oprah Winfrey Talk Show Chapter 10 of A New Earth, dated May 6, 2008. This thesis is aimed to find the elements of ethnography of communication in the talk show among Oprah Winfrey (host/interviewer), Eckhart Tolle (guest star/interviewee) and other participants as interviewers by using descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher used two stages. First, the researcher searched the data on talk show Oprah Winfrey transcript. Second, the researcher downloaded the data on A New Earth Class, Oprah.com, Transcript on File. http://www.scribd.com/doc/27888005/Ch10-Eckhart-Oprah-New-Earth-Webinar - Transcript. In analyzing the data, the researcher used some steps. The researcher analyzed the elements of ethnography of communication in Oprah Winfrey Talk Show Chapter 10 of A New Earth, dated May 6, 2008: first, reading the transcript of the talk show, second, analyzing the utterances which were used by the host and the guest stars in the talk show by using Speaking Grids(1972a. b:55-57), third, classifying the elements of ethnography of communication found in the talk show and the last was drawing the conclusion. The elements of ethnography of communication are setting and scene, participant, end, act sequence, key, instrument, norm and genre. First is setting time and place, setting time is at night and setting place is in te studio. Second is participants, they are Oprah Winfey (host/interviewer), Eckhart Tolle (guest star/interviewee), Kimberly Elise, Kippy, Beth, Elzbieta, Michele, Sharon, Denise, and Tatiana. Third is end, the end of this talk show is awakening our life's purpose. Fourth is act sequence, the act sequence is divided into three parts, opening stage, middle stage and closing stage. Fifth is key, the key of the talk show is serious, laughing, and joking. Sixth is instrument, the instrument is spoken language. Seventh is norm, the norm uses standard politeness, because there is social status between the speakers and the relationship is not intimate. The last is genre, the genre of the talk show is divided into three stages, they are: social function, schematic structure (opening stage, middle stage, closing stage), and linguistic feature.
